2005, year of the rooster

For this year, year of the rooster, the Vietnamese New Year or Tet won't begin until the 10 of February. Tet are celebrated throughout Viet Nam for 3 days. On the first day of Tet, children dress up in new clothes and turn to their grandparents and parents to wish them longevity and good health. They then go around the village to say good wishes to all of their uncles, aunt, cousins and other relatives. As a gift for their good wishes, their parents, uncle, and aunts usually give them "lì xì" or brand new bill enclosed in red envolope.

It's a tradition that everyone celebrate Tet. No matter how poor people are, they just celebrate Tet and wish that the new year will bring them new hope, new fortune, new beginning for a better life.

......and one of the most exciting entertainment of Tet is cockfighting. No one know when cockfighting became a part of Tet's celebration but it surely put a bright smile on the face of both the young and the old men.

Leg Examination
Tam Phân

The legs is one of the most critical part of the rooster. The ideal legs should have a long thigh and a shorter shank. The thigh is important because the KO power is generated from the thigh.

When you fold the leg as in the illustration, if the distance of the shank (from the knee to the base of the foot) is equal to about 1/3 of the total length of the legs, you have what is known as "Tam Phân" legs. It's an ideal legs that every cockmaster wish to have but not every fowl has it.

The ratio in number is like this: 6 inches for the thigh, 3 inches for the shank. (9 inches total for the length of the leg)
