Introduction
The so called "Taiwan" is an
Asian gamefowl breed known for its size, weight and power.
In the pit this bird has a reputation when it comes to endurance,
toughness and a persistent
fighting style. The first birds appeared in Europe in 1983 when a
Belgian breeder named
Johnny van Impe imported some of these impressive fowl. Belgian
cockfighters quickly
adopted this bird to cross it with other gamefowl breeds to
improve fighting capabilities.
On the other hand breeds were crossed into the Taiwan to make
them more agile and faster.
All this extensive crossing also meant that the population of
pure Taiwans rapidly decreased.
The last two decades have also resulted in a large number of
crossed Taiwan birds. There is
a great variety in size, weight and physical features. Shortly, a
number of dedicated European
Taiwan breeders started to ring the alarm bell. It seems that
ranks close up and that there is
a sincere interest in reviving this impressive feathered warrior
from Taiwan. Regarding the
creation of the Taiwan Game the following, the Japanese occupied
the isle of Taiwan from 1895
to 1945 during this period the Japanese forced Japanese culture
upon the people of Taiwan.
Poultry sources also mention that the Japanese also imported a
number of poultry breeds into
Taiwan. All of them layer breeds. No remarks about the
importation of Shamo or other Japanese
gamefowl breeds. But it is more then logical that for example the
Japanese military and
high positioned administrators imported their beloved gamefowl
from their homeland. Secundary
it is plausible to believe that Japanese farmers (send over in
greater numbers) took their
own poultry breeds with them. Maybe also the Malay-like "Ainoku"
breed mentioned by Finsterbusch
in his publication from 1928 titled "Cockfighting all over
the World".Another possible influence
is the link with mainland China. The Chinese established the
first contacts in 300 AC.Extensive
trade with China flourished onwards the year 1683 when Taiwan was
ruled by the Ching dynasty.
But all these historical and cultural facts alone wont lead us to
final conclusions.

Taiwan Game - Standard (UK)
Here you can find the current British
standard for the Taiwan Game breed.
It is accepted by the Poultry Club of Great Britain. The UK is
one of the few
countries were the Taiwan Game has been standarized for
exhibition purposes.
This standard is also a good tool for further development of the
breed.
