Sumatra Game

Breed Features

The Sumatra is a unique gamefowl breed as it shows a very interesting breed feature: double spurs (according the literature sometimes even with triple spurs). The Sumatra is also described as jungle fowl. Some old reports mention that the natives caught Sumatra cocks during mating season as at this time of the year the birds were extremely aggresive. After fighting these birds in their villages the natives returned the birds back into the woods to be caught again next year ! Other sources say that the Sumatra of today is a result of wild Sumatra cocks mating with the "kampong" chickens during their captivity. DNA sampling could prove this theory.

rich and long saddlefeathers

a rich and well developed tail, the sicklefeathers should just touch the ground and not drag on the soil.

Sumatra males have different face colors ranging from red to blueberry colored.

the females have face colours ranging from red to pitch-black.

A bird with a good station, well developed tail and saddlefeathers (good structure). A well balanced elegant bird

The bird on the right is a so called offcolor (splash) bird. Generally these splash-coloured birds show a good type and all typical breed features. When a splash bird is mated to blue fowl, this will result in both blue and splash offspring. Also interesting is that pale blue birds will be revived and show a more intense deeper blue. When splash- coloured bird are mated to pure black, black-coloured offspring will be the result. Simply said dont cull those splash-coloured ones !
