Lari (Iranian Asil)

Four types of gamefowl excist in Iran : Bankiva-type birds, Malay-type birds, large Asil-type and a more lower stationed and bulkier type of gamefowl. Generally all the gamefowl even if different in type are known as "Lari" . This depends on their region of origin. Iranian sources speak of a "Lowland (plains)" and a "Highland (mountain)" type. Iranian gamefowl are only used for cockfighting (natural spurs only). Weight : 3 to 6.5 Kg (6.6 to 14.3 Lbs). A small population of Lari excists in Europe. Very interesting is the type of bird shown on the left image. This type of bird is known in Russia as "Kulanga" (Russian Malay). Another very interesting fact is that the Russian Orlov, which in fact is a bearded Malay comes from Iran too. There is not much information on the "Morgh Graas" or fighting fowl from Afghanistan. Cockfighting is still a very popular pastime of the Afghani men throughout the country. Available information - cockfights in Afghanistan are organized in natural spurs only. The Afghani people use two types of gamefowl 1) large Bankiva-type birds and 2) Malayoid-type gamefowl (information: Mr.Anwar Shafar - Holland). The majority of the Afghan gamefowl are of the large Kulang Asil type (for a detailled description about the Kulang Asil please visit the India chapter (North Indian-type Asil).
