The term subcontinent signifies "having a certain geographical or political independence" from the rest of the continent. A lot of information about the Asil which exists in the Western world is based on information gathered by British and other colonial sources. The geographical area covering India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was colonialized from 1510 till 1947 by the Portuguese, English, Dutch, French and Danes. Due to the complexity and the overwhelming number of languages used in the Indian subcontinent a lot of misinterpretations were the result. Faulty information is still used which in the end is confusing breeders and other people interested in the Asil breed. Due to Muslim rule onwards the 7th century in Northern India great impact was caused on Indian society regarding language, culture and religion.
